Salty blue waves crashing on the rocky coast, sunlight streaming on the colourful houses layering the cliffs, a buzz of vacation excitement in the air. If this is what you’re looking for out of your vacation to the Almafi Coast, then Positano is the place for you!
Here are all the great reasons why Positano is the best place to stay in on the Almafi Coast:
1. The Views
It is no surprise that the Almafi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The incredible colours, the rugged cliffs, the splashing blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea – it truly is a magical place. The houses are all strategically placed on the edge, with wide windows to admire the wondrous view. There are also many walks you can do up the cliffs to see the coast from all angles. Even better, take a boat ride to see the beauty up close.
- My biggest tip: if you are coming from Naples, taking a boat to the coast is a MUST!
- Similarly, if the Almafi Coast is your next stop after Rome, take a train from Rome to Salerno. Then, hop on a boat to the coast. This experience is just wonderful! (Unfortunately, the beating sun is your worst enemy on this boat so bring a ton of water!)
2. The Nightlife
- the nightlife in Positano was part of the reason we had such fond memories of Positano! Positano has a really cool club called Music On The Rocks, located in a cave inside the cliffs. Come here for all the major music bops, hot bartenders, and to dance the night away until 4 AM.
- My biggest tip: it will be tempting to only party on the weekend here. However, we didn’t end up going out Saturday night at all because cover charge was raised to 50 euros! The best nights to go were from Wednesday-Friday night. 15 euro entry + drink!
3. The Food
Located right on the sea, this is the place for some amazing seafood! Of course, there are many delicious options for those who are not a fan of seafood. Believe it or not, my friends said that Positano had their favourite food from the whole trip!
- My recommendations: try Positano’s signature lemon sorbet. Grab a sandwich from the deli (made on the spot). Even better, cheers with some limoncello!
4. The Adventure
- there are many activities that you could do in Positano. This includes:
- Hiking up the cliffs to incredible views
- you can also do an infamous hike on this coast called “Path of the Gods.” This is a 2-4 hour hike of a moderate difficulty with absolutely incredible views! Read more about it here
- Ride a vespa along the Almafi coast
- Wine tour – although you don’t think of wine tours when you go to Positano, this region also has its own vineyards that are worth touring if you are a wine connoisseur
- Rent a boat – you don’t even have to have a planned destination to take a boat trip! Rent a private boat for a snorkelling tour, a tour of the grottos, and to ride at sunset. The views are spectacular, the water is crystal clear, the sun is shining. All you need is good company!
- Kayak or paddle board along the coast
- Hiking up the cliffs to incredible views
5. The Access
- The access to other beaches, towns and islands along the Almafi Coast is unbelievable!
- Beach hopping – If you ever get tired of the busy Spaggia Grande, take a small walk to other beaches like Fornillo Beach, Arienzo Beach Club and Laurito Beach. You can read more about the beaches and how to get there here.
- Island hopping – boat trips are leaving everyday from Positano to the towns and islands. You could go to the other towns on the Almafi Coast, take a trip to historic sites of Pompeii or see the most beautiful island on the Tyrrhenian Sea – Capri!
- My biggest tip: a day trip to Capri is a MUST! However, this is such a popular day trip that you really should book it in advance! Book it either on the day you arrive or in advance so you are not disappointed that each boat trip to Capri is booked.
- Town hopping – don’t be afraid to explore other parts of the Almafi coast, including Almafi, Sorrento, Ravello, Praiano, Maoiri and Naples. Each have their own vibe and these towns are meant to be a bit calmer than Positano, if you would like a break from the touristy town. You could take a car, a motorbike, or even go by boat for those beautiful views!
6. Small vacation town vibes
- The town is buzzing with vacation excitement! There is something for everybody to do, whether it’s exploring the town, swimming, eating, drinking, partying, or shopping!
- Shopping – Positano is filled with boutiques, handicraft ceramics, jewellers, and souvenir shops. There are some really beautiful memento’s to buy, as many clothing items and artistry work is decorated in cute Positano lemons!
- Have an Aperitif at sunset – this is an Italian tradition! Before dinner, Italians will relax with a nice drink and some finger food. Relax, have an aperol spritz and enjoy the best views at Franco’s Bar, Aldo’s Cocktail Bar and Il Tridente Cocktail Bar.
- Go to a beach club – beach clubs are quite the luxurious experience for any party-goer. If you would like a day to feel the ultimate adult resort experience, head over to Arienzo Beach Club or Treville Beach Club for a lavish day. Other places are just outside of Positano, but many include free boat shuttles with their packages – look into places like La Fontelina in Capri, or One Fire Beach Club in Praiano.
7. The people
- Many of the workers in Positano are young Italians who come to work on the coast for their summer jobs. They are very friendly, have great recommendations and if you go out to the club you may see them partying it up as well! The summer resort experience, for sure!
My overall recommendations for Positano:
- Take the opportunity to visit Collina Bakery for some Italian baked goods for breakfast!
- Go to the Delicatessen grocery store deli – seriously, I had the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten made fresh right in front of me (for 2 euros!).
- Do not miss Capri! You will not forgive yourself for this!
- Check out what events are happening at the beach – sometimes there are beach parties at night!
- Go out to Music on the Rocks during weekdays. They entry prices are cheaper and it’s just as fun as on the weekend!
- When you are travelling to Positano, make sure to take the boat shuttle, and not a car! It is quicker, a much more comfortable journey (not winding roads) and only about 10 euros more!
Of course… no destination is perfect. If you would like to find out the worst parts of vacationing in Positano, head over here.
