Of course, no place in the world is perfect. So, here are some things to be prepared for your holiday in the Almafi Coast:
  1. The prices – everything from booking accommodation to renting a beach chair is very expensive.
    • Prepare to pay at least €70 per night per person. I know… It is an expensive place to stay! Even worse, for 70 euros you can expect an airbnb that is 200 steps up the mountain.
      • To give you some insight, our accommodation was €100 a night. According to google maps it was a “12 minute walk” up the mountain. However, this walk took us 20 minutes!! And it was all stairs!
    • Food at a nice restaurant is ~ €20 a meal. I personally wasn’t impressed by the food here (I preferred Rome) but my friends loved it!
    • A beach chair right in front of the water for the whole day is €50
    • Entry to Music on the Rocks is €15 on a weekday. It increases to €30 on a Friday night, and €50 on a Saturday night.
  2. The stairs – The Almafi Coast consists of towns built on a mountain. This means that to get to any hotel, you need to walk up steps. If you are rich rich, you will need to walk up only a few steps. If you are anything but rich rich, prepare to hike up the mountain.
  3. The pebbled beaches – When you imagine a beach, you likely imagine soft white sand to lie down on. Unfortunately, Positano, among other destinations in Southern Europe, has pebbled beaches. This can be quite uncomfortable to walk on.
  4. Loud and busy – Located on the Almafi Coast, Positano is a vacation town for people of all ages. The beaches can get quite busy and the boat tours fill up quick. If this is not your vibe, then it might worth staying in a different town on the Almafi Coast, like Almafi or Sorrento.
On the bright side…
  • There are many foods that are not that expensive at all! For example, gelato is €3, croissants and bakery treats are anywhere from €2-4, and you can get an Italian sandwich made from fresh ingredients at the deli for only €2.50.
  • It may be discouraging to even attempt going up stairs in scorching hot weather, this is where the views are! There are also some splendid restaurants and cafe’s if you risk walking up a few staircases!
  • A beach chair rental is 50 euros a day… just so you know. While a beach chair is not necessary to survive the Italian coastal heat, an umbrella is! I would recommend buying one inland for a better price.
  • If you have weak feet like me, it’s going to be painful walking along the pebbles. Bring a pair of flip flops or water shoes to enjoy your walks along the beach.
