If there is a European city you must visit before you die, it is definitely Rome. Rome is unlike any city I have seen before – it is a trip back in time to Ancient Rome, while also being a beautiful, modernized and cultural artefact of Italy.

The thing is, everyone in the world knows that Rome is an unmissable place to visit. Here are the best 6 Rome travel tips for you!

1. Anytime of year will be better than July and August.

If you can visit another time, try to visit June and September instead! At the height of the summer, Rome reaches temperatures of 40 degrees! To make matters worse, it’s the type of humid, hard-to-breathe type of heat (and trust me, I love the heat and it was too hot for me!). Additionally, Rome is incredibly crowded in the summer. To the extent that it was actually quite annoying! (This also could’ve been due to the fact that this was the first COVID-free summer so people went wild with travel!) Lastly, for all the girls, don’t bet on seeing any cute Italian boys… they’re probably all out of the city to miss this tourism chaos!

2. Water, water, water fountains!

Take a mental note of all the drinking fountains you see around the city and make sure you carry a bottle of water with you. You will need it and it’s very easy to refill your bottles with some cold water from the and make room to carry a water bottle. Only by hydration will you last the Italian heat.

3. Skip-the-Line tickets

for all the top tourist attractions. Buy them off of TripAdvisor or the actual monument websites. It’s not actually expensive and totally worth it to pass the huge crowds to get your sight-seeing done for the day!

4. Use public transport

while many vacationers try to stay away from public transportation which they use to get to work all year, believe me, in Rome public transportation is the best way to travel! You will see so much more of the city as the buses drive through the hotspots of Rome. There will be sites that you see that you didn’t even know about and want to return to! In fact, if you would like some details about sights worth seeing in Rome, have a look here.

5. Avoid the checkered tables

these scream, “tourist trap!” Most of these restaurants are overpriced, and cater towards tourists’ preferences. Usually they are located around the major sites and monuments, so it’ll be tempting to take a seat at those tables if it means you get a view of the Colosseum, for example. If you are visiting Italy, I assume that you want the authentic culinary experience! So how do you find it? Well…

6. Talk to the locals, they know best!

Seriously, the locals will be your best friends. You may meet manager of the gelato shop who will take you to his uncles hole-in-the-wall restaurant, and you will eat the most amazing food of your entire trip! (This happened to me!) Just don’t be afraid to strike conversation with them, joke with them, and I’m sure you will get some good recommendations for everything right from them!
